Historic Wharton Cemetery in Texas

The Wharton County Historical Commission will host a Cemetery Preservation Workshop on Friday, November 11, 2016, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 12, 2016, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Wharton, Texas.  Registration and fee required for Saturday’s hands-on cemetery preservation workshop.

On Friday evening, James “Rusty” Brenner, owner of Texas Cemetery Restoration LLC (on Facebook here) and Cemetery Preservation Supply LLC (on Facebook here), will give an overview of his work preserving and restoring historic cemeteries. This is an informational presentation, and it is free and does not require registration.

Then on Saturday at Wharton Cemetery, Rusty will lead a hands-on cemetery preservation workshop teaching basic preservation techniques for cleaning, repairing, resetting, and levelling gravestones and monuments. The day will begin with a walking tour of the cemetery discussing the significance of designs, materials, and common preservation issues for historic cemeteries.

Attendance on Saturday is limited to 50 people. Attendees will meet at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 325 N. East Avenue, Wharton, TX for both events. Lunch will be catered by Reyna’s. On Saturday, participants are encouraged to wear closed toed shoes (no flip-flops) and sunscreen or a hat.
